printing technology as it required precise indexing, driving the developers towards an IML solution based around a one-piece full wrap label from Korsini-SAF and IML automation by US-based CBW Automation. The use of IML also allows production of short run promotional branding. Canadian mould-

maker StackTeck won the award for best thin wall package in the same competiton with another product for Kentucky Fried Chicken, in this case a 64oz carry-out bucket produced using IML in combination with the company’s TRIM thin wall moulding system. Moulded by SriThai Superware of Thailand, the TRIM technology creates a thinned- out ribbed wall allowing part weight to be cut by 40%. In this particular application, the PP label not only decorates the part but also adds to its stiffness. StackTeck, which is a leading player in IML moulds in North America with its own pilot production cell, demonstrated two other IML applications at the recent NPE show in Florida. The first was 4-cavity mould running on an Arburg Allrounder 630 hybrid packaging machine equipped with IML automation from Yudo of South Korea. It was moulding 115mm diameter round lids in a clarified PP from Total Petrochemicals on a 3.5s cycle using double-sided labels from Verstraete of Belgium. The second was also a 4-cavity mould producing 6oz PP cups on a 180 tonne BMB moulding machine equipped with IML Automation from Ilsemann Automation of Germany. The parts were decorated with metallic effect labels also supplied by Verstraete.
Matt and gloss Label supplier Verstraete, which recently increased capacity by 20% at its site in Maldegem in Belgium and
is midway through construction of a new 2,400m2 factory expansion there, used NPE to show its latest label finishes. Matt IML delivers a natural matt finish while UltraGloss, as the name suggests, yields a high gloss finish that is claimed to make colours
look more intense. “This is what brand owners are looking for – unique packaging that makes their product stand out on the shelves,”
says a spokesperson for the firm, who said
the Matt IML and SuperGloss technologies can be combined to create premium effects or to highlight specific package detail. The new Verstraete options were demonstrated at NPE on an all-electric moulding machine from Niigata running a drinking cup mould using IML automation from Campetella of Italy. Its Modula HS side entry system can run at cycle times of less than 3.5s and includes camera-based vision control of label place- ment. The system can be configured for single-face and stack mould production.
