utility companies and consumers to better match energy generation with energy consumption. Hand held devices, which are already available in some markets, enable consumers to effi ciently monitor and modify their usage patterns. Ultimately, smart meters could help in the process of controlling greenhouse gas emissions from existing power plants and prevent the need for construction of new power plants. With every utility part of a smart grid – including smart meters in the future for water – the hope is that enabling a partnership between the consumer and supplier will result in better management of natural resources.
