BEHIND THE SCENES Thoughts from the team

CONTRIBUT ORS EVENTS HORIZON

By the time you read this, I should just about have recovered from a great few

days at the ITM Conference in St Andrews. Many thanks to those hardy buyers who kept me company in the hotel bar long into the early hours! We have a host of our own events coming up in the next couple of months, each bringing the business travel community together in their own way.

First up is the TBTM Golf Masters on 12th May in Sussex. That is followed by The People Awards winners ceremony on 22nd May in London. And then comes our biggest event of the year, The Business Travel Conference, which takes place in Hammersmith over the two days of 15th & 16th June. Finally, our second Business

Travel Dinner Club at London's Dorchester Hotel is on 23rd June. Yes, there’s a lot in the diary, and even our popular Christmas Party is now on my radar!

As you read this column we will

probably still be waiting to hear who will be leading the country over the next four years. Whoever it is has lots on their plate to deal with, so let’s hope that all the pre-election hype over London’s new

runway, APD and HS2 – to name but a few items affecting business travel – will be fairly and fi nally addressed.

David Clare, Publisher

Dave Richardson has over 30 years' experience as a travel industry journalist. He is a previous winner at Carlson Wagonlit's Business Travel Journalism Awards and has visited over 70 countries.

Laura Gelder has written for BMI Publishing for seven years, working across its extensive portfolio of b2b travel titles, and is a regular contributor to The Business Travel Magazine.

What’s the most innovative travel product or service you’ve come across in recent months?

Laura Gelder THE APPLE WATCH

Mark Harris has worked in the business travel industry since 1990 as a supplier, consultant and journalist. He is a regular contributor to travel industry media and industry events.

“The Apple Watch is already having an impact on the travel industry as suppliers clamour to add apps and incorporate its new-fangled functionality.”

Catherine Chetwynd THE ASCOTT LIMITED & SAMSUNG

Roger Gardner is an aerospace, aviation and environmental expert with experience of industry, government and academia. He has written about sustainable travel for TBTM since 2009.

“Ascott has teamed up with Samsung to provide central control of apartments from a mobile or tablet, enabling you to set the temperature – and more - before you even arrive.”

Roger Gardner ELECTRIC CARS

Emma Allen is a freelance journalist writing about travel and the MICE sector in particular. Her work has appeared in The Guardian, The Observer and Selling Travel among other titles.

“I’m impressed that electric cars are making inroads with chauffeur car and taxi companies. Cleaner and quieter travel can only be a good thing in cities.”

Emma Allen OCULUS RIFT

“Oculus Rift headsets, which give a virtual reality travel experience. They divide opinion but, whatever your view, the technology and camerawork are pretty groundbreaking.”

Dave Richardson INTER CITY EXPRESS

“It's not in service yet, but arrival in the UK of the fi rst Inter City Express train for the East Coast and Great Western routes promises faster journeys, more capacity, greater effi ciency and possibly more business services on board.”

Catherine Chetwynd writes about B2B subjects ranging from travel to HR, specialising in the corporate travel sector.
