THE REVIEW ON THE MOVE
ITM UPDATE Rachel Simcock Simone Buckley
Chief Executive, Institute of Travel & Meetings (ITM)
P
erhaps it was never in any doubt. But now, according to me, it’s
offi cial – Richard Branson is the most popular fi gure in the travel industry. How do I know? Well, it might not be using particularly scientifi c methodology, but we recently interviewed about 50 senior executives from across the business travel sector. Conversations revolved around the future, changes in distribu- tion, supply chain challenges and consumer trends. To inject some light-heartedness into proceed- ings we asked each individual with which person in the travel business would they most like to take a selfi e.
“Interviewees used words and phrases including ‘visionary’, ‘inspirational’ and ‘risk taker’”
There were a plethora of weird and wonderful answers, from Thomas Cook (deceased) to Google CEO Larry Page and SAP boss Bill McDermott. But the name uttered more
often than all others was Richard Branson. He is, after all, not only the founder of Virgin Atlantic (which makes him relevant to us), but also one of the country’s most popular entrepreneurs. Some might say, an icon of
contemporary society. Our interviewees used words and phrases including 'visionary', 'inspirational' and 'risk taker'. All are qualities synonymous with the Branson name and the brand. As we each plan for the future, it is these kinds of attributes we must search for in ourselves.
