lay over at the station and become Train No. 190, the Saratoga Flyer, departing at 3:45 p.m. and arriving at Saratoga Springs at 5:57 p.m. Saratoga Springs is also served by Amtrak’s Adirondack and the Ethan Allen Express, but departures no longer sync up with S&NC trains. It is easy to photograph the action at Saratoga Springs station, either from the platform or from the Church Street (Route 9N) overpass. Keep the CP radio frequencies tuned in for mainline freights or locals departing nearby Saratoga Yard.


The steel deck truss bridge over the Sacandaga River at Hadley is a popular location to photograph trains in either direction. The bridge is accessible from both sides to allow for morning and afternoon shots. There are many good photographic opportunities around the station at North Creek, especially when the crew performs its runaround move to prepare for the southbound run. If you’re looking for a pleasant afternoon diversion, the main street is very walkable with a number of interesting boutiques and


restaurants. A diverse roster of motive power attractively painted in a blue-and- gray tribute to the D&H is the draw for railfans. While one rare EMD BL2 (S&NC 54, ex-Bangor & Aroostook 54) has been holding down regular assignments on the S&NC, at press time the railroad was preparing to place a second BL2 (S&NC 56, ex-BAR 56) into service in time for the convention. A note of caution — cellular phone


and data service is sporadic in the region served by the S&NC. A good GPS and
