planned service. To complete construction and not operate the service would be bad politi- cally. There is some thought that 30-year-old cars from St. Louis may be employed as a stop gap. Thanks to Frank Bauer for the news.
News from Branford
The Shore Line Trolley Museum proclaims itself as the first operating trolley museum in the United States. It had been called the Branford Trolley Museum for many years, but is actually located in East Haven, Conn. The museum collection contains many rare and unusual cars, some of them quite historic. The October 2014 issue of the Branford Elec- tric Railway Journal features the restoration of horsecar No. 3 along with much historical material about the early days of horse-pow- ered transit service. This material includes an interesting passage about John Stephen- son, one of the major suppliers of horsecars and omnibuses in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Horsecar No. 3 was built in 1893 for the Metropolitan Street Railway of New York. The Shore Line museum has another horsecar, Toronto No. 11, which is a replica. It now appears the Shore Line Trolley Mu-
seum has about completed much of the track- work in its Elevating the Collection project. Readers will recall that Superstorm Sandy flooded many parts of the museum and affected the traction motors of many historic pieces of equipment at the museum. The rational move was to take the collection to higher ground. Please put the Shore Line museum on the list of places you must visit when the weather is once again pleasant. It is located at 17 River Street, East Haven, CT, 06512; 203-467-6927; fax 203-467-7635,

The NEW YORK CITY SUBWAY SYSTEM cel- ebrated its 110th Anniversary in 2014. The first subway line, which connected City Hall with Harlem, opened for revenue service on October 27, 1904. The trains were very pop- ular and the system is still growing, as wit- ness the extension of the 7 Line from Times Square to the Javits Center. The Second Ave- nue Subway is under construction and should be open within the decade. Thanks to Aaron Grant for the information. November 7, 2014, was the date of ground- breaking for the extension of the PURPLE LINE SUBWAY to the west in Los Angeles. The proj- ect to build a subway to Santa Monica from downtown Los Angeles has been discussed for three decades. At the present time, the plan only reaches Wilshire and Western. The push west is most likely to reach only as far as the Veteran’s Administration in Westwood. The first phase of construction to Westwood is a costly project; this first segment of the Pur- ple Line will cost $600–700 million per mile. La Cienega will be the westernmost stop of the first phase, and there will also be stations at La Brea and at Fairfax Avenue. The cost is slowing the project, which may take until 2035 to be completed. Many thanks to Frank Bauer and John A. Lee for the news. In New York City the FULTON CENTER
opened. It is very much a center for transpor- tation, with nine subway lines converging, including the 2, 3, 4, 5, A, C, J, Z, and R lines. There is a new tunnel under E Street that will link Fulton Center with R trains and, in 2015, the World Trade Center, the PATH train complex, and the 1 and E subway lines. There is space for retail and other activities in
