News 9 Cool Science promotes RACHP careers

COOL SCIENCE, A youth engagement project for RACHP (Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Heat Pumps) proved to be a big hit at the 2015 Big Bang Fair, which took place at the NEC in Birmingham from 11th-14th March. The event attracted more than 75,000 young scientists and engineers, teachers, parents and STEM professionals.

Cool Science was founded by Chris Vallis of AB Group, an active member of the Institute of Refrigeration and a member of the IoR executive council. It is supported by a cooperative of 12 key industry bodies and companies: AB Group, Institute of Refrigeration, British Refrigeration Association, ECH Engineering, EBM Papst, Dean & Wood, Mitsubishi Electric, Danfoss, Harp, GEA Searle, Space Engineering, Carel UK. To help address an

engineering skills gap, Cool Science is engaging and inspiring a younger and wider

audience by sharing and explaining the science behind the industry.

Everything The Big Bang Fair does is aimed at showing young people – primarily aged 7-19 years old– the exciting and rewarding opportunities available with the right experience and qualifications. Big Bang works with partner organisations from business and industry, government and academia to give an idea of the scale of engineering/science in

the UK.

The Cool Science stand attracted considerable attention from visitors and interacted with more than 12,000 young people over four incredibly busy days.

Features of the stand

included four members of the Mad Science team, with dry ice experiments. In addition, two bespoke hand-built bicycle-powered refrigeration machines, designed and hand built by Dr Ed Hammond of

ECH Engineering attracted attention. The harder the rider pedals the colder it goes. The temperature was displayed on LED displays above the rider, encouraging some friendly competition. This was a great demonstration of a vapour compression refrigeration system; its components, the energy input required, and the cooling (and heating) effect. Also on the stand were slideshows about Fantastic Fridges, a new website for young people, from the IoR. There were also slides explaining the new Apprenticeship Standard for RACHP engineers, launched by government in the same week as the Big Bang Fair. President of the IoR,

Graeme Maidment, said: “Cool Science was a fantastic success and it gave us as an industry the opportunity show large numbers of young people that we are a brilliant career choice.”
