@ACRNEditor Going digital

learnt a new word recently – omni-channel. I asked the marketing person nearest to me if it was related to the term ‘multi-channel’, and was informed that multi-channel is the old- fashioned word for omni-channel. The difference being that multi- channelled channels are history because they don’t talk to each other whereas omni-channel channels are current because they do.

I’m still not certain whether this was an accurate definition, or a personal view of generational differences. The word came into conversation because of digital discussions here at ACR News which revolved around the evolving nature of people’s reading habits.

The upshot of this discussion means that the ACR News magazine is now available digitally as well as in print. The archive of digital issues is now available on www.acr-news.com. Or, if you would rather have it delivered directly to your inbox, you can subscribe to make that happen.

Not content with just this, ACR News now has its very own app available for free in the Apple store, which has past issues as well as some added value features such as active hyperlinks and embedded video.

All of which means that not only is ACR News available in print, but also on your computer, tablet and phone, all for no extra cost.

There are lots of other nuggets of digital gold in the pipeline, so watch this space.

It seems that everything is going digital these days, and I’ve been a big fan of it since my very first computer – a 16k ZX spectrum. I would even say that I feel privileged to have been along for the ride on board the online revolution, jumping on with a very primitive form of email in 1993. I also knew people who were researching domestic artificial intelligence in the late nineties. And here we are, with cookers that can have your dinner ready by the time you get home, and domestic

heating controlled from your smart phone. On the commercial scale, some building management systems are being also controlled by iPads and smart phones, with the building effectively telling the facilities managers when it wants attention. But where is the future leading? Apparently washing machines are being chipped and wifi’d up just in case someone thinks of a need to control them from a smart phone too – they can already ‘be monitored’. Amusing, but possibly a very shrewd business move.

The next thing will be people being chipped. Oh wait, they already are – at Stockholm’s first House of Innovation, Epicentre.
