News 17 LJJ wins CL2 m&e contract
BUILDING SERVICES SPECIALIST, LJJ, has been awarded the m&e design and installation project for a new containment level 2 (CL2) facility at The Pirbirght Institute, a national centre for preventing and controlling viral diseases of farm animals and those that can spread from animals to humans.
Constructed on a greenbelt site within a masterplan development site line surrounding the existing Pirbright campus, the new BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rated facility will provide a purpose- built research laboratory at The Pirbright Institute for 90 scientists.
LJJ will carry out a full m&e fit out for the building and the project also includes developing both the mechanical and electrical infrastructure for the campus to facilitate development of further buildings on site in the future.
LJJ will install a roof-top plant room which will include

extraction plant with heat recovery, chillers and gas boilers. The company is also installing the infrastructure for a planned district heating system as part of the scheme. The mechanical installation also includes all plumbing and services for both the labs and the washroom facilities, including Vulcathene anti- corrosion pipework for
the labs, CO2 and nitrogen supplies and oxygen depletion sensors.
LJJ is also responsible for the installation of the ventilation systems for the microbiological safety cabinets and fume cupboards, as well as the air conditioning system for the cold room.
MEMBERS OF THE Building & Engineering Services Association (B&ES) North West Region have donated £4,500 to Manchester’s Middleton Parish School. Chairman of the B&ES North West Region, Steve Bradshaw, presented the cheque to head teacher Jacqui Potts.
Mr Bradshaw said: “My fellow members and I are delighted to have been able to provide additional resources to this excellent school, which carries out such valuable work right in the heart of our community.’ Ms Potts confirmed that the donation would go towards the provision of an outdoor area that would transform a concrete playground into an area rich in opportunities.” The Yorkshire Region has participated in the fight against heart disease – the UK’s single biggest killer – by making a £3,000 donation to the British Heart Foundation.
The donation, which was made to the charity’s Yorkshire Heart Centre, will go towards the £23,000 required to purchase a 2D echocardiograph for use at Leeds General Infirmary. The improved display and three-dimensional imaging offered by this specialised piece of equipment are of particular value in heart valve surgery. “We are delighted to be working with the BHF, and intend to raise as much cash as possible on its behalf,” said B&ES Yorkshire regional chairman Daniel Ball, of Imtech Engineering Services, based in Ossett, West Yorkshire.
According to Sue Green, the BHF’s fundraising volunteer manager:
“Everything we do is intended to make a tangible difference to people’s lives. The support of organisations like B&ES makes a big difference in raising the vital funds we need in order to do so.”
