f the eyes are the window to the soul, they can also, from a medical standpoint, be windows to your health. Diseases including diabetes, Alzheimer’s and

Parkinson’s can be diagnosed from eye exams; disorders affecting balance can also be studied via the eye, as the eyes are linked to the inner ear and the body’s balance system. Jessica Rowbury in her article on page 14 investigates the techniques for studying the eye and the imaging equipment used, a lot of which originates from machine vision because of the frame rates and image quality provided by these cameras. Tere is also a shiſt in medical imaging away from

CCDs to faster and cheaper CMOS image sensors, because of the advances in CMOS image quality. Tis is a shiſt that’s been happening for a while now in machine vision (and in other fields like medical imaging), and one that looks set to continue. Te article on page 18 discusses some of the trends taking place in image sensor technology, and the potential impact of Sony’s new global shutter CMOS sensor on the machine vision marketplace, a sensor that is showing impressive performance metrics. Tis issue also has a preview of the Automate show

(page 26) taking place in Chicago, USA in March, and, linked to this, Tom Eddershaw on page 22 looks more closely at the necessity of machine vision in creating flexible factory production lines. While machine vision is only one piece in the factory automation puzzle, it is quite an important one and one that will both improve productivity and reduce manufacturing faults.
