PBA TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS AT 50 03 02

SPARE ME Neither Mika Koivuniemi nor opponent Tom Daugherty manages to roll a spare in the semi- final game of the 2011 tournament. The Big Finn tosses the front 11 before leaving a 10-pin, while his shell-shocked opponent manages two strikes on his way to an even 100 score. Koivuniemi goes on to win the biggest prize in PBA Tour history, defeating Tom Smallwood for $250,000.

PAGING PAGE Rhino Page throws a strike in the 10th frame to put himself in position to win the 2009 H&R Block Tournament of Champions title. Needing a spare in the “11th,” Page’s next shot is shockingly bad, leaving the 1-3-4-7-9-10. Patrick Allen prevails, 267-263, but not before Page manages to actually convert the spare.

UNFORGETTABLE Don Johnson wasn’t thinking about a perfect game until throwing the first strike in the 10th frame to shut out opponent Dick Ritger for the 1970 Firestone title. Had Johnson shot 300, it wouldn’t be remembered nearly as well as what actually happened: The ringing 10-pin on his last shot and his dramatic face-down-on-the-approach reaction made the non-perfect ending unforgettable.
