THE SKINNY ON THE LATEST AND GREATEST

43 Hook 17 Length 15 Breakpoint Shape COLUMBIA 300: DEEP FREEZE

Manufacturer’s Intent: “The densities of the modified Messenger core have been changed in order to create an enhanced look on dry condi- tions,” says EBI Group Marketing Director, Bugsy Kelly. “The Deep Freeze features the same great New Era cover that has helped make many of Columbia 300’s performance balls successful, especially the Freeze line.”

Core: The symmetrical, modified Messenger 2 core has an RG of 2.59 and a differential of .035. We had about three or four inches of flare. This is a variation of the Messenger core that has been striking for years.

Coverstock: The arctic chill blue New Era reac- tive coverstock comes out of the factory sanded with 800, 1000, 2000 and 4000 Abralon, then pol-

ished with Powerhouse factory finish. The RA is 1.34 and the effective surface grit is 5210.

Overview: This sharp-looking ball from Columbia 300’s lower mid-price performance line fits the description of the intent to a tee. It needs friction to make its move, but gives you a strong hit on drier lane conditions. This ball looks cleaner than the original Freezes by a couple of boards. It’s more than an arrow less hook than the Eruption Pro Hybrid (October 2014) on our patterns. On the lighter house pattern we were able to play up the track area with a great shot and good carry. We had hold area left and recovery area right. On the Stone Street pattern, we had to play a direct line from an outside angle to get to the pocket. The length and volume of the pattern made our

carry decrease because the breakpoint was too late. On the USBC Doubles/Singles pattern, this would be the last-game ball if you wanted to try to stay in the track area and keep angles tight. The Deep Freeze will give the length you need when the heads start to go or when the pattern is short, but it does need friction to work. It will fit into your arsenal as a go-to ball on burnt lanes or on old wood lanes. The Deep Freeze also is a great ball for those with slower ball speeds or for high-rev players on hooking lane conditions.
