PRODUCTS EDITOR’S CHOICE CRITICAL DEEP SPACE CONNECTOR

Smiths Connectors has been selected to provide robust space-grade connectors to the landmark ESA Rosetta mission, which has successfully landed its Philae probe on the surface of comet 67P/Churyumov– Gerasimenko. The company’s high-density K and CMD/CSD connector Series were chosen for the critical board-to-board interconnects of the ground and navigation

equipment, and for the satellite’s on-board S and X-band Deep Space Transponder, necessary for the probe to communicate its findings back to Earth. These connector series integrate Hypertac Hyperboloid technology. “We at Smiths Connectors extend our wholehearted congratulations to the entire ESA and CNES organisation on pioneering this significant step forward in the evolution of space exploration, and are delighted to play a role in the project,” said Andy Eaton, Managing Director of Smiths Connectors. “It is gratifying to contribute to an initiative of Rosetta’s magnitude as it highlights the importance of proven, reliable and durable interconnect technology in space flight.”

DEBUG TOOLS LAUNCHED TO SUPPORT LPC54100 MCUS RANGE FROM NXP

To support the latest LPC54100 Series of microcontrollers from NXP, Lauterbach has developed a debug and trace tool called µTrace for Cortex-M based processors. The tool uses USB 3.0 for connection to the host and connects to the series via Serial Wire Debug (SWD) interface. “With µTrace the developer can control the operation of the

program and analyse the data in C and C++ by the use of simple and complex breakpoints,” said Barry Lock, UK Manager, Lauterbach. “Also, an analogue probe can be connected to read the current and voltage measurements for energy profiling, this enables developers to fine-tune their software for minimal power usage. The tool will help engineers develop better devices and greatly reduce development time.” The LPC54100 Series features an asymmetric dual-core

architecture to enable scalable active power and performance by using a Cortex-M0+ and a Cortex-M4F for different sensor- processing tasks to optimise power efficiency. The debug tool fully supports this type of asymmetric multicore processing (AMP) debugging by starting an individual TRACE32 instance for each core. “The features of µTrace are an ideal complement to the LPC54100 family, enabling customers to optimise their always-on products,” said Brendon Slade, the Director of Tools and Embedded Ecosystem from NXP, “The support that the Lauterbach tools provide for the LPC54100 multicore architecture also gives developers the debugging facilities needed to fully exploit the capabilities of the device family.”
