RGBC SENSORS PROVIDE PROXIMITY DETECTION
The latest sensors from Avago Technologies, provide red, green, blue and clear (RGBC) light sensing and proximity detection under a variety of lighting conditions and through a variety of attenuation materials, including dark glass. These devices are are now available from Farnell element14. The proximity detection feature
of the APDS-9950 allows a large dynamic range of operations for
accurate distance detection. For example, it can be used to enable a mobile phone to detect when the user positions the device close to the ear. The IR LED sink current is factory-trimmed to provide
consistent proximity response without requiring customer calibrations. An internal state machine provides the ability to put the device into a low power state in between proximity and RGBC measurements, providing very low average power consumption. The colour-sensing feature is useful in applications such as LED
RGB backlight control, solid-state lighting, reflected LED colour sampler and fluorescent light colour temperature detection. The integrated IR blocking filter also improves the performance of this device making it an ideal solution.

Mouser Electronics, Inc. is now stocking the MIO‑5271 Compact Single Board Computer (SBC) from Advantech. This board is a fanless 3.5inch SBC that uses an optimised thermal design based on 4th generation Intel cores. Advantech SBCs support Multiple I/O (MIO) and networking options as well as high resolution audio and HD
video. These SBCs target industrial computing applications and are especially suited for harsh environments. These Compact Single Board Computers offer developers a
choice of either a 1.9GHz Intel Core i5‑4300U or a 1.6GHz Intel Celeron 2980U. This allows the device to deliver the appropriate computational performance while also providing energy efficient behaviour for targeted applications. The ASBCs support up to 8GBytes of DDR3L DRAM in a single 204-pin SODIMM slot. Two SATA ports are available for hard drive expansion. A user switch allows configuration for either one mSATA port or one miniPCI port. Typical power consumption is about 4.6Watts. Many networking and connectivity options are supported,
which include two USB 2.0 and two USB 3.0 ports, two Industrial Gigabit Ethernet ports, and up to up to four RS‑232/422/485 ports with ESD protection. A Realtek ALC888S, High Definition Audio codec is supported with Line-in, Line out, and Mic-in connectors. Multiple video‑out options are available including a VGA port and an HDMI/DisplayPort connector. The built-in iManager is an intelligent self-monitoring agent with software and hardware control functions including intelligent resource control, system protection and restore, and automatic system bootup and/or recovery in critical conditions.
