product update | Materials NUCLEATION Milliken nucleates HDPE
Milliken has introduced a new nucleating agent developed for injection moulding of high- density polyethylene in applications such as waste containers, crates and pallets. Hyperform HPN 210 M
nucleator improves the mechanical performance of HDPE to levels approaching those of polypropylene (PP) impact copolymers, the company says. Testing according to ASTM D790-00 is said to show an increase in stiffness of up to 50% against standard HDPE. This improved rigidity can be used to enable
thin-wall designs, contributing to weight reductions in the final part.
Hyperform HPN 210 M
also improves HDPE’s heat resistance, allowing it to be moulded into products where PP is more commonly used. HDPE nucleated with the new additive lifts heat distortion temperatures by 10-40°C, the company claims. In terms of processing, HPN 210 M can result in shorter cooling times, while the nucleator’s ability to create lamellar crystal orientation of

PE in the polymer flow direction helps to reduce part shrinkage. Better control of shrinkage and warpage contributes to improved quality in large, complex parts, and opens the way for PE to be used in moulds that traditionally run PP without the need to re-tool, says Milliken. Hyperform HPN 210 M has been available in the US from the beginning of December, with introduction to Asia, Latin America and Europe following when the required chemical registra- tions are complete. Food contact approvals are also in process. ❙

ENGINEERING PLASTICS Conductive POM cuts spark risk
Tecoform PO20 NL EM from Turkey-based compounder Eurotec is a conductive POM resin developed for injection moulding of parts such as automotive fuel fillers where there is a risk of static discharge causing a fire or explosion. “Movement of flammable liquids such as gasoline

flowing in a tube can cause electrostatic accumulation,” according to Gizem ÇAKIR, Eurotec R&D project manager. “Discharging of this static electricity can ignite fuel vapour. While refilling at gas stations and at airports, electrostatic discharge is always a fire risk,” he says Tecoform PO20 NL EM is an

moulding Germany-based Dreyplas has added ultra high molecular weight PE (UHMWPE) grades from Mitsui Chemical to its product line, including a number of grades suitable for injection moulding on conventional equipment. The injection mouldable Lumber product line is offered in pellet form and offers very low friction, high resistance to abrasion and chemicals, and good electrical insulating performance. It is particu- larly suitable for applica- tions such as paper feed rolls or printer gearwheels, where it can reduce noise generation. The product can also be
used in low friction parts for automotive applications, such as seat belt compo- nents and window slides, says Dreyplas. ❙
