Market update | Fakuma 2014 review

For many of Europe’s leading equipment makers, Fakuma is an opportunity to lay out their investment plans and sales expectations. Chris Smith reports

Confi dence shows at Fakuma

Fakuma is an increasingly signifi cant trade show. Taking place in every non-K year, it not only provides a shop window for Europe’s plastics machinery industry but also provides an opportunity to fi nd out how the major players see the market developing, to identify the hottest geographical markets and key technology trends, and to learn more about their investment plans. Arburg adopted its characteristically cautious

approach to forecasting its 2014 sales fi gures, although managing partner Michael Hehl made it clear the

company was set to surpass its 2013 result of around €470m. “Overall the news is extremely positive. To date, we are highly satisfi ed with the business trend and our incoming orders in 2014, he said. “We expect sales to be in the order of €500m but it may be quite above that.” Hehl said the company’s latest 18,600m2

expansion

of its manufacturing operation at Lossburg in Germany – Arburg still makes all of its machines at its headquar- ters location – is running to schedule with the goal of occupation in the autumn of 2015. “The extension will increase the total area of our headquarters in Lossburg by 13% to almost 165,000m2

. The new building will

signifi cantly expand our assembly and acceptance capacities for large injection moulding machines up to 5,000kn [500 tonnes] and turnkey systems,” he said. Arburg is also currently building a new 2,500m2 headquarters at Rocky Hill, Connecticut, in the US, and an 800m2

facility in Poland. It is in the process of

subsidiary at Shenzen and opened a new Technology Centre at Micheldorf in Austria. The investments underline Arburg’s confi dence in

the global injection machinery market, particularly in North America and China. “I do not expect any serious deterioration in the market,” said Arburg managing director of sales Helmut Heinson. “In the US things will stay pretty much as they are and China will develop positively. In Europe there may be slower development than in the past but I do not expect major drops.” The outlook is similarly positive at Austrian injection machinery maker Engel. Having just completed its 2013/14 fi nancial year with sales of €935m, Engel CEO Dr Peter Neumann said the company was on course for a 7% increase for the coming year. If achieved, it will
