news US machinery demand still strong
Demand for plastics machin- ery in the US remains strong with the latest Q3 data from the Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI) showing total shipments down by 2% on the same period in 2013 but still at near record levels.
SPI Committee on Equip-
ment Statistics (CES) data shows shipments of primary plastics equipment totaled $301m in Q3, up by 6% on the Q2 total of $284m. The year to date fi gure is up 6% compared with last year. Looking specifi cally at injection moulding, the value
of injection machinery
shipments declined by 4% in Q3 of 2014 compared with the 2013 period. However, year to date shipments are up 4%.
Ancillary equipment
shipments (which include robots, temperature control- lers and materials handling equipment) reached a
record-breaking $108m in Q3 2014. For the year to date, bookings of ancillary equip- ment are up by 12%. “The market conditions that drive investment in new industrial equipment have prevailed throughout all of 2014, and I expect these

US-based EnviroTech Molded Products has installed a 900 tonne (1,000 US ton) Engel Duo two-platen moulding machine for production of thick-wall mouldings weighing up to 13.5kg. EnviroTech operations manager said the machine, which is also equipped with an Engel Viper 40 robot, was select- ed for its versatility and large shot capacity. Duo machine features such as tie-bar retraction, for example, make it
fast and easy to load the bulky moulds used at the company. Production of thick wall parts is a speciality of EnviroTech, which produces fi lter plates, pump components and fi ttings for the oil & gas, fi ltration, automotive, and paper and pulp industries. The company processes around 2,000 tonnes of polymer a year at its 8,800m2 plant at Salt Lake City.
