New Chair for CBI South West Steve West, the Vice- Chancellor of the University of the West of England, is now the new Chair of the CBI South West.
He replaces Graham Cole of Augusta
Westland who has held the role for the last two years. Steve will support CBI member companies in the region and will represent the area’s business leaders on key policy and regulatory issues.
BCU strengthens team
Birmingham City University has appointed Professor Keith Horton as the Executive Dean for its new Faculty of Business, Law and
Social Sciences. Professor Horton will join in January, leaving his position as Dean for the Faculty of Business, Computing and Law at the University of Derby, which he has held since 2010.
UWE welcomes new Deputy VC
The University of the West of England has appointed Professor Jane Harrington to the role of Deputy Vice- Chancellor.
Professor Harrington has worked at
UWE Bristol for many years and has held management roles at all levels within the Faculty of Business and Law.
House of Lords honour
A UWTSD professor has been recognised for his UK-wide contribution to business and enterprise skills
Andy Penaluna, a professor of Creative
Entrepreneurship at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD), scooped the Enterprise Educators Award during a prestigious event at the House of Lords. The annual awards bring together key figures from the UK’s small business, enterprise and skills sector to celebrate the very best in enterprise learning and skills.
The University of Notingham has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Shanghai Advanced Research Institute (SARI) to jointly undertake groundbreaking research into carbon capture. The work with SARI will focus on
the development of solid absorbent technologies for CO2 capture. It will be led by The University of Notingham’s Professor Colin Snape, Director of the Engineering Doctorate Centre in Carbon Capture Technologies, and his team, in conjunction with experts at SARI.

INTERNATIONAL SPOTLIGHT UCD opens global centre in Beijing
Ireland’s Minister for Education and Skills, Ms Jan O'Sullivan, announced details of University College Dublin's global engagement strategy, which sees the seting up of global centres in China, India, Malaysia and the United States. "I am delighted to welcome the
announcement by President Deeks regarding the establishment of a UCD Global Centre here in Beijing. This global
centre is one of four being set up by UCD in China, India, Malaysia and the United States,” she said. The UCD Beijing global centre is co-
located in the premises with the Irish Embassy and Enterprise Ireland. At present, there are 6,000
international students including 600 Chinese students studying at UCD in Dublin.
