Funding boost for postgrad studies


Students at the University of York have received scholarships to study Master's degrees as part of a new multi-million pound scheme. Around 68 students have received


scholarships as part of the scheme to encourage underrepresented groups into postgraduate education. York is a member of a consortium of

Businesses with clear growth aspirations are invited to apply for a share of a £16m fund via the University of Derby. The University has secured the money


from the government's Regional Growth Fund (RGF), which is aimed at fuelling business expansion and helping to create and safeguard thousands of jobs in the East Midlands region. The ‘Invest to Grow’ project will


support business growth in the region by investing in companies, as well as providing access to its extensive range of wider resources including academic expertise and technology. Professor John Coyne, Vice-Chancellor


of the University of Derby, said: "This is a tremendous vote of confi dence in our city and region. We are delighted that the University will deliver this multi- million pound investment, supporting companies in the East Midlands to grow and fl ourish. "It will benefi t companies that need


funding or other support to innovate and accelerate growth, particularly those companies which have the potential to become high value income generating businesses. "This funding is particularly timely,


especially in a fast growing region such as ours where companies are trying to grow and confi dence is returning but it still remains diffi cult to get all the help needed from the banks. "Investing in these companies will


create high value jobs in the region, which will help to retain our best graduates and at ract others, creating a pipeline of young talent to the region.”


six universities – Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle, Sheffi eld, Warwick and York – which secured £3m funding from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) to develop ways of at racting and supporting disadvantaged students into postgraduate study. At York, the grant was used to promote


access to taught Master's programmes starting in 2014/15. Each of the 68 students awarded a York Master's Opportunities Scholarship will receive £10,000 in the form of a full fee waiver combined with a stipend. In addition, thanks to a generous


donation by York alumnus Richard House, two further scholarships – the Tom and Eileen House Scholarships – have been awarded for tuition fees. In total, the University of York

Community groups in Derby will be able to get their hands on a share of £10,000, after the University of Derby launches its Community Fund. Following the


success of a pilot scheme last year – which supported local projects including a childcare centre, picnic and play day, and family table tennis scheme – the fund will give local groups across the region a chance to impact their community. There will be four rounds of


funding in 2014/15, with up to £2,500 funding available in each round. Rosie


Marshalsay, Head of External Relations at the University of Derby, said: “The fund will give a boost to those who wish to inspire others and make a real diff erence. We take our responsibility as an integral part of the local community

must be based either in Derbyshire or any of the following neighbouring towns: Burton, Leek, Macclesfi eld, Mansfi eld or Ut oxeter.

the consortium was part of £25m distributed to universities and colleges as part of the HEFCE’s Postgraduate Support Scheme. Postgraduate students at 40


universities will receive support through the scheme, which aims to ensure the continued success of taught postgraduate education by working with universities and employers to enable participation from students who may not otherwise progress to this level.
