The Rugby World Cup will be hosted in England in 2015. The event is one of the worlds largest sports events and a major catalyst for sport tourism in the UK. Discussion on the potential for sport tourism using the case study of England’s 2015 Rugby World Cup will be the main focus of this seminar.

Sports Tourism Events Programme


Following on from another dramatic summer of sport around the world, WTM 2014 will be highlighting the relationship between sporting events and the travel industry during its Sports Tourism programme.


The programme kicks off on Tuesday 4 November with ‘Rugby World Cup 2015 – the Potential for Sport Tourism’ which will look at the opportunities available when the Rugby World Cup is held over six weeks in England next year.

Heading the session will be former British & Irish Lion and


captain of Ireland Keith Wood who, after leaving rugby, founded W2 Consulting which specialises in project evaluation and strategic planning in the sport and tourism sector. He will moderate a panel of experts who will discuss the potential of capitalising on high-profi le sports events, hopefully resulting in economic, social and promotional benefi ts for the host country.


‘Future Trends in Sport Tourism as a Destination Development Strategy’ will take place on Wednesday 5 November and will be overseen by expert Professor Terry Stevens. He will identify key trends and discuss how regions are embracing sports tourism as part of their destination development strategy.
