UNWTO & WTM Ministers’ Summit Tourism and Mega-Events: Building a lasting legacy

TUESDAY 4 NOVEMBER WTM GLOBAL STAGE AS850, 11:00-13:00

As part of the World Travel Market’s Ministers’ Programme, the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) works in partnership with WTM to host the UNWTO & WTM Ministers’ Summit in London.

WTM and UNWTO bring together tourism ministers and leading tourism experts to determine the best course of action for the industry. This year the spotlight will be on tourism and mega-events, exploring the enormous impact that participating in mega-events will have on all the whole tourism chain for the host destination. Beyond the immediate advantages of investment and infrastructure development, the legacy impacts include transport, urban regeneration and employment as well as building a national unity and pride through community involvement and attracting more private investment. Mega-events need to include careful pre, during and post strategies, and be fully part of the long-term development plan of a city, region or country if they are to be successful in leaving a positive legacy.

Moderator: Charles Hodson, CNN International Ministers: Hon Derek Hanekon, Minister of Tourism, South Africa; HE Amel Karboul, Minister of Tourism, Tunisia; HE Vinícius Nobre Lages, Minister of Tourism, Brazil; Christopher Rodrigues CBE, Chairman, VisitBritain; HE Issa Mohammed Al Mohannadi, Chairman, Qatar Tourism Authority, Qatar; and HE Michel Pharaon, Minister of Tourism, Lebanon.
