supranational body and therefore not representing its individual Member States. This follows that Malta is not automatically a member. To become a member to the 2011 ASU, Malta has to be nominated by an existing member country/territorial unit.
Having obtained the support of already member Scandinavian countries, Malta is working hard to become itself a full member. The efforts for this Endeavour are being spear-headed by the Aviation Division of ‘Transport Malta’ which is a regulator in its own right. This initiative currently stands tabled to cabinet for approval and every effort is being made to conclude the matter as soon as possible so that the Maltese aviation sector may start enjoying the fruits of momentum gathered.
How has/can your firm assist the client when such challenges arise
PKF Malta works closely with other key market players locally to deliver a pristine service to its valued clientele. The approach PKF Malta adopts is an entirely proactive one where the firm works with lobby groups and holds meetings with the regulators and factions of Government making presentations and delivering proposals of ways to attain betterment in the aviation sector as in fact it is actively involved in also at present with regard to the harmonization of legislation and practice on the aviation leg of the Highly Qualified Persons Scheme Regulations that
offer a reduced 15% tax rate for highly specialized aviation post holders in the field.
Earlier on this summer, PKF Malta representatives had the opportunity to open a debate on the very expansion of the aviation sector in Malta as a press conference addressed by his Hon the Prime Minister Dr Joseph Muscat. The aim ever being conducive fresh developments that would provide an impetus to local business and the Maltese economy, PKF Malta have since been working on a detailed proposal to present to the Ministry for Finance which we believe will benefit both Government as well as practitioners including a lot of SMEs.
