KIRKLAND & ELLIS EXPANDS GLOBAL RESTRUCTURING PRACTICE WITH HIRE OF NEIL MCDONALD IN HONG
KONG Kirkland & Ellis LLP is pleased to announce that Neil McDonald will join the Firm as a partner in the Hong Kong office. Mr. McDonald will join Kirkland’s Restructuring Practice Group, which includes more than 100 lawyers around the world.
“Neil is a preeminent restructuring lawyer in Asia, widely recognized for his expertise in a variety of financial distress matters,” said Jeffrey C. Hammes, Chairman of Kirkland’s Global Management Executive Committee. “We are excited that this extraordinary lawyer will be joining our top-tier, global restructuring practice and our Hong Kong office.”
Mr. McDonald is a distinguished restructuring attorney with a long track record of success in Asia. He acts for financial institutions, insolvency appointment holders, turnaround management firms, hedge funds and private equity firms. Mr. McDonald advises clients on all aspects of financial distress including consensual workouts, shareholder disputes, liquidations, receiverships and other enforcement options including litigation. He also advises clients on the proprietary acquisitions of distressed businesses and assets. Mr. McDonald previously was the head of the Business Restructuring and Insolvency practice in the Hong Kong office of Hogan Lovells.
Mr. McDonald’s recent work includes: advising the Steering Committee of bondholders in relation to defaults of US$1.8 billion of bonds issued by Sino-Forest Corporation; advising the liquidators of Titan Group Investment Limited in relation to the sale of assets for value in excess of US$300 million; advising the bondholder group in relation to China Forestry Holdings Co Ltd.; and advising a number of financial institutions in relation to the collapse of Lehman Brothers.
NORTON ROSE FULBRIGHT ADDS TO ITS GLOBAL DISPUTE RESOLUTION PRACTICE WITH TWO PARTNER HIRES IN GERMANY
Global legal practice Norton Rose Fulbright is pleased to announce that today, two new dispute resolution and litigation partners are joining the practice in Germany. Clemens Rübel is an IP and patent litigation partner who will be based in Munich, and was previously at Bardehle Pagenberg; and Christian Wolf is a banking litigation partner who is joining the Frankfurt office from DLA Piper.
Clemens Rübel (Munich) – patent litigation Clemens Rübel advises on the enforcement of patents, utility models, design patents and competition rights before all relevant German courts. He represents both leading German and international companies as well as medium-sized enterprises in complex, often cross-border patent infringement lawsuits, sometimes involving product piracy. He works with clients in the engineering, construction, life sciences and healthcare sectors.
Clemens will further develop Norton Rose Fulbright’s IP strength in Germany, which is one of the key locations for patent disputes in Europe, with the German Patent and Trademark Office, the European Patent Office, the Federal Patent Court and a branch office of the future EU Patent Court all listing Munich as their registered office location.

Christian Wolf (Frankfurt) – banking litigation Christian Wolf has extensive experience of cross-border commercial law proceedings before state courts and national and international arbitration courts. He advises leading banks and financial service providers on secured and securitised loans, collateral security law and investors’ suits. He also advises banks and industrial companies on post-M&A disputes and on pursuing damage claims within the scope of white-collar-crime.
Jamie Nowak added: "Regulation and investigations in the financial institutions sector is an important aspect of our business globally.
“Christian perfectly complements the existing team in Germany. We have a strong banking and finance practice here in Frankfurt, Germany’s key financial centre, and we are pleased to be expanding that capability with Christian, who is a very experienced litigation lawyer. He will work domestically across Germany, but also across our international offices on cross border cases.”
Following these hires, the German dispute resolution and litigation practice comprises 15 lawyers, including five partners. The practice also recently added Hamburg-based of counsel, Axel Boës, who specialises in complex disputes, with a focus on international transport and maritime law.
The team advises and represents clients in disputes before the courts as well as in arbitration and mediation. The practice focuses on disputes in the areas of banking, construction, capital markets, post-M&A, insurance, IP, energy and investment protection.
