Hazel sang with a second USO tour not long after the first. Since then, she has written countless songs and performed with her band, Zodiac, thousands of times. Many years later, when her son was

headed off to serve in Vietnam, she wrote a song, “Don’t Cry, Mom,” every word of which was spoken by her son the night before he left. Te CD with that song has sold more than any other, she said.

Today, Hazel still has a full schedule

of appearances at military and veteran support organizations, including a weekly gig at a local VFW Post in South Portland. She’s still singing for the sole reward

of touching the hearts of her audience. “Music is a way of life for me,” she

said. “It’s been a beautiful life, and I’m glad to have put a smile on someone’s face every chance I get.”

NEW WAY

We’ve had a lot of questions on the changes to the Life Member payout system. Below is an explanation.

There will only be 2 payouts each membership year instead of 3. This means organizations will receive their money in two installments rather than 3. Auxiliary, Department and National dues payouts will be issued from the Life Membership Fund as follows:

• For the 2015 membership year, the first payout will be in January 2015. The January

2015 payout will cover all continuous Life Members as of December 31, 2014 and all new Life Members whose applications were received between July 1, 2014 and December 31, 2014 who have not paid 2015 annual dues. This payout would cover the 2015 calendar membership year.

• The second payout will be in August 2015. The August 2015 payout will cover all

new Life Members who had not paid 2015 dues and whose applications were received between January 1, 2015 and June 30, 2015. This payout would cover the 2015 calendar membership year.

• For the 2016 membership year, the first payout will be in January 2016. The January

2016 payout will cover all continuous Life

Members as of December 31, 2015 and all new Life Members whose applications were received between July 1, 2015 and December 31, 2015 who have not paid 2016 annual dues. This payout would cover the 2016 calendar membership year.

• The second payout will be in August 2016. The August 2016 payout will cover all new

Life Members who had not paid 2016 dues and whose applications were received between January 1, 2016 and June 30, 2016. This payout would cover the 2016 calendar membership year.

PAYOUT AMOUNTS WILL BE AS FOLLOWS:

• The 2015 payout will be $2.45 each to the Auxiliary, Department and National for each Life Member. Departments will receive $3.68 for each Department Life Member- at-Large.

• The 2016 payout will be tied to the actuarially suggested payout amount from

the November 2014 evaluation.

• From then on, the payout will be whatever the actuary recommends in the prior year.
