“Practice Makes Perfect” is an apt aphorism for any sport, including golf. But it also applies perfectly to Auxiliary 537 members’ super-successful record of organizing with Post members the annual James A. Danner VFW Post 537 Golf Tournament in Etters, Pennsylvania. The fall of 2013 was the tournament’s 16th year.

Proceeds totaled $6,000 for veterans at the VA Medical Center in Lebanon, Penn., thanks not only to the golfers who paid to play that day, but to the hundreds of hours volunteers spent to make it all happen. Member Jackie Lomman, who served on the golf fundraiser committee, said the number of golfers in 2013 was 116, and participation was expected to be just as high in 2014. Each team pays an entry fee, and although 1st- through 3rd-place winners receive cash prizes, most teams donate their winnings back to the cause. Local businesses and corporations can sponsor a hole on the course for $100, for which they receive a sign printed with the name of their business. Some said they wanted to do still more, so a “Patriot” sponsorship of $500 was created. Volunteers pulled all of the big factors together –

publicity, soliciting businesses for raffl e items, offering sponsorships – along with “little” details like tucking snacks in the players’ carts. “It’s a testament to volunteers and businesses that

they can generate this kind of money for the veterans,” Lomman said. “We do this golf tournament to honor and improve

services for our veterans,” said member Brenda Knaub, “and because it’s a lot of fun.” At press time, members were headed into the last few

days of “mad rush” preparations for the 17th tournament. They’ve got their minds set on making more and more money to give to veterans in their community, Lomman said, and they can just about see $10,000 on the horizon.
