do this again because it’s so incredible,” Ash said. “It doesn’t matter if you’re a small Post in a small town or even an economically downtrodden part of a town, you can do this.” In 2013, around 150 veterans in
nursing homes around the county each received the gift of $10-15 in their Christmas cards. “It was so touching to go in and meet with people,” said Ash. “Tey opened their cards up, and you could just see them light up.” So when April’s Quarter Raffle
drew double the number of last year’s – more than 250 people – Auxiliary members were more than pleasantly happy about the result. Te fundraiser brought in $3,500 for veterans’ gifts this Christmas, and more for the next step: scholarships. Tey created two scholarships for
attendance at the community college in their area: one for a veteran and one for a veteran’s family member. Tose will be awarded after applicants meet the school’s requirements.
A crowd of community members show their support for veterans by paying for paddles to play in the Quarter Raffle.
Accompanying the funds was a
boost for the local organization as well. Tey gained several new members and became more active, participating in local parades and other events where they’d not had a presence in years, Ash said. “It really sparked things back up for us.
Susan Bruns and her daughter, Heather O’Connor, are happy with their bid paddles at Auxiliary 2257’s Quarter Raffle fundraiser.
Leanne Ash and Sue Bruns make a good team, whether organizing a Quarter Raffle or staffing a booth at another community event.
