Monarch misery Story: Pilots’ association to ballot members on Monarch changes This gets worse and worse. How on earth did Monarch manage to do this? They say demand is flat. It isn’t flat for easyJet and Ryanair. They spent the last year recruiting pilots on the promise of profitability and growth. They talk about orders for 30 new planes, albeit fleet replacement. And all along they must have known they were accumulating debt. The pilots they recruited from other airlines will now be jobless and many will either have to give up a flying career or move abroad. Monarch management have a lot to answer for, as do the Mantegazza family. Disgraceful. l Jax Travel Weekly would welcome a response from Monarch
Handbags at dawn Story: Tui AG in trademark row with handbag maker Confusion? Isn’t it obvious people may take off and go for a holiday to Spain in a handbag? l Mimi
Great publicity for Tui: bullying German behemoth takes down plucky British minnow! l Shambles
Fly from Manchester Story: ‘Lens’ on Little Red as Virgin refocuses Virgin, there is a small airport (not that small: it’s got two runways) called Manchester up north. While you have very kindly operated Orlando for many years, along with a staggered service to Barbados, we are crying out for routes like Cape Town, Tokyo and Bangkok. Of course, there are great connection networks with the like of Etihad, Emirates and Qatar to Africa and the
Far East, but there is nothing quite like a direct route. The north also has a wealth of businesses with clients in these destinations. l Richard Slater, Personal Travel Agents
Jetset go Story: Dnata to buy Travel 2 parent Stella Travel Services Retailers should switch to Jetset and find out what a really agent-friendly, trade-only seat operator and tour supplier can provide. They are the logical option given all the handwringing over dnata’s ownership of Travel 2 and Gold Medal Travel. We changed to Jetset back when Thomas Cook took over Gold Medal and never regretted it. l Roger Blizard

LETTERS OF THE WEEK
I see the SNP vows to scrap APD if it wins the vote. That’s great – it will make up for everything else that will have an inflated price in Scotland. l Mimi
People will vote Yes and, believe it or not, on the morning of the 19th the sun will still rise, the birds will sing and I will go to work – with an extra spring in my step. l Eilidh Robertson
It’ll be interesting to see what would happen to the cost of a holiday in Europe for Scots once they pull out of the EU. Scottish travel agents risk losing a lot of business. l Just Saying
What would independence mean for VisitBritain? l Alison Cryer
Any country that believes in a giant underwater serpent deserves to go it alone. l Oracle
