AFS NEWS COC Draws Chapter Leaders “ I’m very satisfi ed with
my long-term print advertis- ing program in MCDP—it’s the only advertising I do. It gives me great visibility and name recognition, both with existing customers and with new ones. And the steady fl ow of new business it brings in easily justifi es the investment.

Research Underway to Develop High Strength Lightweight Aluminum
AFS-sponsored research has begun to study and develop
a new procedure for aluminum silicon metal refi nement for ultra-high strength and fracture toughness. T e project will compare the mechanical properties of the new alloys to commercially available lightweight alloys. It is based on a concept that barium’s solubility in the silicon phase demonstrates a hypereutectic aluminum silicon alloy can be produced without a primary silicon phase, thereby produc- ing a microstructure exhibiting higher strength. T e study is being monitored by the AFS Aluminum

Division 2. So far, the fi rst portion of the design of experi- ment metric of silicon ranges and barium alloy additions have been tested, demonstrating the refi nement to the silicon morphology. From Around North America T e annual Chapter Offi cers Conference was held Aug. 21-22 in Rosemont, Ill. Under the theme “From Member to Volunteer,” this year’s conference drew 33 chapter leaders from AFS chapters in the U. S., Canada and Mexico. Opening com- ments and a general welcome were off ered by AFS President Chris Norch, Denison Industries. Over the course of two days, attendees participated in vari-
ous presentations and sessions aimed at providing ideas and management strategies to grow and improve their chapters. T e sessions featured industry experts and covered top-
ics from chapter fi tness checks to co-sponsored industry education, chapter programming, AFS division structure and youth outreach. “T e Chapter Offi cers Conference is a great way for chapter
volunteers to fi ne-tune their organization,” said AFS Director of Membership Leo Baran. “Every year we off er presentations and sessions with timely topics and on key issues to help them grow their chapters.” T is year, the Chapter Offi cers Conference welcomed Dana
Cooper, Fairmount Minerals Ltd., who presented on the Sus- tainability and Women in Metalcasting Committees, and Joe Costabile, Hickman, Williams & Company, who spoke about the Foundry Educational Foundation (FEF).
