THE SCOOP] we are US Lacrosse Common Ground

Uganda, Iroquois, Sankofa and Team USA stage clinic in Commerce City

By Paul Ohanian

Two months ago, the lacrosse world came together for the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championship, presented by Trusted Choice, in Colorado. For 10 days, Dick’s Sporting Goods Park served as a mixing bowl of international fl avor, with players from multiple continents and walks of life competing side-by- side in the name of lacrosse. Different languages, unique customs and colorful ensembles were all part of the scene. Quietly, just a mile away at Pioneer Park, a municipal facility in Commerce City, a similar gathering formed. No games were played, no championships awarded, but lacrosse remained the unifying element.

More than 100 kids from various ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds participated in a half-day player’s clinic, led by clinicians from Team Uganda, the Iroquois Nationals, the Sankofa Lacrosse Alliance and Team USA. For two hours, youth players from City Lax Denver, Native Lacrosse, the Boys’ and Girls’ Club of Denver and Commerce City Parks and Recreation were taught basic game skills by world-class players. They participated in skill development sessions, learned about the origins of the game, enjoyed

autograph sessions with players and walked away with posters and T-shirts. Each also received tickets for FIL World Championship games that day. “Our kids were very excited to get a free lacrosse camp experience
