he Philadelphia Wings are no longer. The National Lacrosse League and Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority announced Aug. 6 in Uncasville, Conn., that the Mohegan Sun casino purchased half of the Wings franchise, and a team under a new name and logo will play there starting in December. The move brought to an end a 28-consecutive-year run for the Philadelphia franchise, dating to its time as one of the original four teams of the then-Eagle Pro Box Lacrosse League in 1986. Wings owner Mike French had said, “The fi nancial model in a market with so many sport and entertainment alternatives has proven to be unsustainable." Familiar faces will be missing when the yet-to-be-named reincarnation of the makes its debut. Wings GM Johnny Mouradian said he will not be involved and a prominent player declined comment because he does not expect to make the move. As well, veterans Tracey Kelusky, Stephen Hoar and Kyle Sweeney were allowed to become unrestricted free agents Aug. 1.
