Quite a Rookie Launch

As the Major League Lacrosse regular-

season wound down in early August, playoff berths were to be had, hopes were ended for others, and milestones reached, not the least of which included former St. John’s attackman Kieran McArdle posting a league record for goals by a rookie. McArdle’s 31st

for the Florida Launch on Aug. 2 against Boston eclipsed the previous record of 30 set by Kevin Huntley with Los

Angeles in 2008, making McArdle the favorite for MLL Rookie of the Year. “It has been a tremendous experience,

and something I had always wanted to do since I was younger,” McArdle said. A pairing with longtime superstar Casey

Powell on the Launch attack made the season even more enjoyable. Powell, at age 38 and playing in his first full season since 2008, led MLL in scoring heading into the final month. “I don't know how he does it, but he is

still the best in the game,” McArdle said. “I learn from him every day." Florida, in its inaugural year, missed out

on MLL’s four-team playoffs, held back by a mid-season five-game losing streak. Denver, Rochester and New York claimed spots. Ohio and Boston played for the final spot

on the final

night of the season.
