RECOMMENDED Mini Pi

THE RASPBERRY Pi Foundation has shrunk its eponymous credit card- sized computer, launching an even smaller form factor.

Equipped with a BCM2835 processor and 512MB of RAM, the Raspberry Pi Compute Module contains the guts of a Raspberry Pi, as well as a 4GB eMMC Flash device, which replaces the SD card storage of the original Pi to save even more space. The computing power is built into a board measuring

67.6x30mm, which fits a standard DDR2 SODIMM connector, making the module roughly the same size as a stick of RAM.

The board, which is aimed at enthusiasts looking to create their

own PCB, contains a number of connectors that users can customise. For those less experienced, the firm is also offering the Compute Module IO Board, a simple, open- source breakout board that users can plug a Compute Module into. The IO Board provides the necessary power to the module and allows users to program the module’s flash memory and access the processor

interfaces in a more friendly fashion, as

well as providing users with HDMI and USB connectors.

The Compute Module and IO Board are available together as the Raspberry Pi Compute Module Development Kit.
