ailment and you really don’t know what foods would benefi t that condition? In Chinese Medicine we look at food as medicine. We choose our foods to benefi t different organs in the body and to bring the body back to balance. Here is a quick guide that will tell you which foods benefi t which organ and their energetic properties. It is a good foundation to keep in mind whenever you go to the grocery store. In Chinese Medicine we learn that

each of the different colors of foods help to promote and nourish a certain organ. Also each of the different tastes stimulate different organs. Here is the basis of looking at food from a fun and exciting perspective.

Green Foods: nourish the liver and gallbladder. They also have a draining affect on the body. They help to drain toxins, heat and dampness down and out. If you are constipated or feel like your intestines aren’t moving, eat a big green salad. If you have acne, infl ammation or are irritated, realize that green foods are your friend.

Red Foods: nourish the heart and circulation. They are usually high in antioxidants and some of them are full of iron (like beets or meat). If you are having problems with anemia or your blood pressure is high, you might want to start adding some red vegetables like beets, red peppers, tomatoes, pomegranates and cherries to your diet.

Orange Foods: nourish the digestion and the pancreas. If you are feeling weak and are craving sugar, get your sugar from your vegetables like a carrot, acorn squash or pumpkin. They are all sweet in nature and will stop the craving for refi ned carbohydrates— which will just spike your insulin and in a few hours you will be craving more sugar.

White Foods: (NOT DAIRY) nourish the lungs and the large intestines. Onions, garlic, leeks, radishes, daikon radishes and rutabagas help to nourish those lungs and break up mucus in the body. If you suffer with sinus congestion, then dairy is not your friend. It is mucus- forming and coats those precious lungs with a heavy fi lm that makes it hard for the lungs to breathe.
