Keeping Bugs at Bay The Natural Way

here is a lot of confusion about the best fl ooring to have in your home. While carpeting is easier on your feet and back, most people think that wood, tile or other hard surfaces are better for your health. The truth is, however, that carpet is the healthier choice. Studies done in Germany demonstrated that homes with carpeting, if vacuumed regularly, are actually better for your health than hard fl oors. This is due to the fact that carpet acts as a giant air fi lter. It traps airborne dust mites, mold spores, bacteria and viruses, cat dander, and other allergens that would otherwise be circulating throughout the air. Carpet becomes unhealthy, however, when toxic chemicals are used in the cleaning process.

Standard carpet cleaning formulas contain a combination of harsh chemical solvents, artifi cial fragrances and detergents. The two most common carpet cleaning additives, Perchloroethylene and Napthalene, are the worst offenders. These toxic chemicals remain in your carpet and can produce dizziness, fatigue and nausea—even kidney and liver damage over time. They could also trigger allergic reactions in sensitive individuals, causing behavioral and learning problems in children, skin rashes, asthmatic attacks, headaches and depression. Rather than throwing out your carpet, consider cleaning it with safe, non-toxic organic cleaners once or twice a year. To help your carpet “fi lter” the air more effectively, vacuum frequently (use a HEPA fi lter). This will prolong the life and beauty of your carpet and improve your health as well.
