Deeper wallets and youth market boost Canada
INTERNATIONAL visitors to Canada spent an economy-boosting $16.4 billion during their trips in 2013, a 2.5% increase over 2012. And UK travellers, who totalled 589,000 last year (down 1.3% on 2012), spent more than any other nationality, totalling £787,800. However, the average spend per Brit, at £1,338, was lower than in all of the other 10 inbound markets, bar France and India, identified as 'key' by the CTC. Travellers to Canada are also getting younger: overseas arrivals aged 24 and under surged 24%, that's 20% of the total. In the UK the youth
market is even more significant, with under-25 travellers representing 29% of all travellers. The CTC has targeted the youth market and its UK office will be talking to key sector operators, such as STA, to develop new programmes aimed at younger travellers, commented Rupert Peters, Vice-President of International and CTC’s UK manager. 'Beautiful scenery', 'local lifestyles and unique character', 'sampling local flavours', 'historical and cultural attractions' and 'city activities' were the top five 'interests' that motivated Brits to choose Canada.
