FROM THE EDITOR T
Retail Technology and Fashion
here are two main themes running through this edition – retail technology and fashion. Our retail technology feature on pages 21-23 aims to tell you all you could possibly need to know about
EPOS systems and how these can help footwear retailers take control. Misfit also majors on Modern Technology this month on page 12.
With the Internet becoming more and more important to retailers, they need to have the latest technology to have any chance of competing on the bigger stage, says Misfit. Despite the initial outlay, they should soon be able to recoup the cost by being able to reduce their stock holding and replenish their best sellers more quickly. If you haven’t already thought about introducing some sort of stock control system, now is the time. The second theme is Fashion, the unsung hero of the British
economy - worth £26 billion and supporting almost one million jobs. In this issue, we report back on the success of Northampton University footwear students at Graduate Fashion Week held from 2nd-5th June at the Truman Brewery, Brick Lane, in London’s East End. Shoe design and manufacture has been at the heart of
Northampton since the industrial revolution and the University of Northampton’s links with the premier shoe manufacturers have ensured that it has been at the leading edge of footwear design. The students who have been working all year to complete
collections underlined the importance the rich history of Northampton’s leather industry has played in the minds of many of their new concepts in shoe design and leather designs. Graduates from the University of Northampton have routinely been recruited by the largest brands in the shoe industry with alumni working for brand names like Church’s, Jimmy Choo, Prada and Clarks. This year, Helen Kirkum, one of the third year students at the
University of Northampton has been awarded the inaugural Cordwainers Footwear Student of the year, awarded to her by the iconic footwear designer Jimmy Choo (see Footwear News on page 4). You can also view some of Helen’s designs and those by other Northampton students on pages 30-31 of this issue. In response to the ever-increasing interest in its heritage, growth
and success in this area, the University of Northampton has developed a new course, BA Footwear and Accessories, which opens in September 2014. As a supporter and friend, Footwear Today magazine joins with the University in celebrating its successes in summer 2014 and will be featuring many of the student’s designs within the magazine’s summer editions. In this issue we also offer a preview of the GDS and tag it! trade
show, which is being held in Dusseldorf, Germany, from 29th July to 1st August. Also, Pure London, which will play host to the UK's largest collection of fashion footwear and accessories at London Olympia from 3rd to 5th August. I'll be attending both events and will look forward to meeting up with many of our readers at the shows. Finally, don’t forget to check out our highly contemporary ladies
footwear collection in this month’s Editor’s Choice Fashion Shoes! Kind regards,
