It’s also important to recognise the increasing variance in the demographics of today’s workforce. In many countries, and indeed in some industries, the workforce is getting older and this has implications in terms of the willingness and ability of individuals to work in foreign countries while maintaining family commitments. There are also more women in the workforce who are juggling commitments to children with the pressures of working life.
Thus there is a need for a more personalised approach to moving people around the world – one that is fl exible enough to acknowledge and cater for individual circumstances and promote diversity. Companies who achieve this ensure that the best talent in the business come to the fore when global opportunities arise.
Evidence based actions
When there are so many stakeholders with different priorities and disparate systems on which data is stored, the aim of having global oversight is sometimes easier said than done. It is often hard for global businesses to see the wood for the trees and decisions are ultimately made based on hunches. In the current environment where being lean is seen as a necessity rather than an ideal, it is important to understand where the greatest improvements can be made. An evidence based approach is the most powerful way to identify these areas and convince stakeholders of the need for action.
Our “BIO” (which stands for Benchmark, Insights and Opportunities) approach collates and analyses existing data held by a business (from whatever system and in whatever format) to draw insights. Whether it highlights a disparity between how you reward your staff and the resulting business performance or shows how the diversity of your workforce directly impacts your customer experience, it can help pinpoint and prioritise the improvements to be made. In respect of your global population, you can measure the return on investment and test whether your talent management objectives are being met.

It all comes down to replacing anecdote and supposition with evidence. The workforce is at the core of any retail company and, once the evidence is critically reviewed, retailers are much better placed to formulate effective people policies.
