Christopher O’Riley

“Out of My Hands”

“Exhilarating.” —Rolling Stone

Saturday, November 8 at 8 pm $30

Christopher O’Riley is a genre-bending classical pianist and host of NPR’s From the Top, known for stretching classical piano beyond conventional boundaries. In FlynnSpace, O’Riley takes on some of modern rock’s most acclaimed and texturally rich songs, with unique interpretations of compositions by R.E.M., Portishead, Cocteau Twins, Pink Floyd, Nirvana, The Bad Plus, Radiohead, Elliott Smith, and more. At turns hypnotic, emotional, dreamy, and bittersweet, O’Riley reimagines these tunes as “etudes for the post-modern age” (Rolling Stone). The result is what all great interpretations strive for: an insightful and unforgettable experience.

Martha Graham Dance Company

“They seem able to do anything, and to make it look easy as well as poetic. Unmissable.” —Daily Telegraph

Friday, November 21 at 8 pm $60/$48/$36

Martha Graham’s influence on modern dance has been compared to Picasso’s influence on art or Stravinsky’s on music. Graham revolutionized dance, lighting, stage designing, costuming, and music; today, her company is one of the most revered modern dance troupes in the world, called “one of the seven wonders of the artistic universe” by the Los Angeles Times. For this performance, the company performs a new piece by Andonis Foniadakis titled Echo, Diversion of Angels (1948), Errand into the Maze (1947), and an 85th anniversary recital of Graham’s famous solo work, Lamentation Variations. Graham’s choreography remains “a true, living American document” (New York Times).
