Shantala Shivalingappa

“Akasha”

“Divinely gifted.” —New York Times

Saturday, February 21 at 8 pm $40/$32/$24

Spinning and stamping before a simple backdrop, Shantala Shivalingappa breathes new life into Kuchipudi, a 2,000-year-old Indian dance style rooted in music and theater. Shantala has worked with some of the greatest artists of our time, including Maurice Béjart, Peter Brook, and Pina Bausch. In her Flynn debut, Shantala performs Akasha, an evening of five vibrant solo dances rooted with live accompaniment by Indian musicians. As she shifts among various characters, time periods, and manners, Shantala “erases cultural boundaries with lightness, wit, and musicality” (New Yorker).

Fred Hersch Trio

“One of the finest piano trios of our day.” —Boston Globe

Friday, February 27 at 8 pm $30

Jazz pianist and composer Fred Hersch is a master of the keyboards, described as a musician “singular among the trailblazers of their art” by the New York Times. Equally revered for his brilliant technical ability and his compositional prowess, Hersch is a four-time Grammy winner who has influenced an entire generation of jazz pianists. Hersch and his trio interplay with a refined approach that almost seems understated and casual, and draws on classical influences in addition to Monk, Miles, and Rollins. This is a rare opportunity to see “the most arrestingly innovative pianist in jazz” (Vanity Fair) in the intimate confines of FlynnSpace.
