The Nile Project

“It’s a refreshing change to see and hear East Africa flexing its powerful musical muscle.” —Songlines

Inspired by Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Project, The Nile Project brings together artists from 11 countries to raise awareness about cultural and environmental challenges facing the Nile River. The group’s sound is created by a stunning variety of instruments from Nile-basin countries, including the masenko (Ethiopia), the ney and oud (Egypt), and the adungu (Uganda), in addition to violin, saxophone, bass guitar, and six vocalists singing in 11 languages. The Nile Project’s 2013 recording Aswan was called a “Must-Hear International Album” by NPR.

Presented in association with the Office of the Vice President for Human Resources, Diversity and Multicultural Affairs through the UVM President’s Initiative for Diversity.

Miwa Matreyek

Los Angeles multimedia performance artist Miwa Matreyek creates magical, rich fusions of trippy animation and live performance that star her silhouette. Her latest solo work, This World Made Itself, is a fantastical kaleidoscopic that leads an audience through the history of the earth, from its birth to today’s fast-paced world. Matreyek also performs Myth and Infrastructure, which traverses seascapes, cityscapes, and domestic spaces to conjure “worlds of visual wonder” (LA Record ).
