Canada’s Athena Automation has broken ground on a new 14,400m2

Systems Centre at

Vaughan in Ontario to provide assembly and integration capacity for its recently developed injection moulding machines.

The plant is intended to

allow Athena, which was established in 2008 by Husky founder Robert Schad, to ship more customised machines beginning in 2016.

The new facility will also

enable the company to assemble larger tonnage machines and showcase ‘lights-out’ plant engineering. The project represents a

$40m investment and will include a dedicated mould trial area, QC lab, offices and support facilities. It will be highly energy efficient, including geothermal heating and solar panels as well as high efficiency water and resin

handling systems. Athena is currently

streamlining its existing plant to produce up to six of its energy and space saving hybrid injection moulding machines, which cover the range from 100-500 tonnes, each month. At the end of 2012 Athena

established a partnership with Sipa of Italy to market 100 and 300 tonne systems for PET preform production. ❙ www.athenaautomation.com
