US machinery shipments up 11% in fi rst quarter

US shipments of plastics machinery recorded another quarter of solid growth in the fi rst three months of 2014, up by near 11% on the same period in 2013 to reach $300.5m, according to data from the Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI). The data, which is compiled by the SPI’s Committee on Equipment Statisitics, showed shipment value for injection moulding machines was up by 9%, single screw extruders by 4%, twin screw extruders by

15% and blow moulding machines up by 60%. SPI also collates data on ancillary equipment sales, which were up by 6% over the fi rst quarter of the year to reach a total value of $98.6m. The growth corresponds with the gains recorded in two of the major recent US data series: Figures from the Bureau of Economic Analysis put industrial equipment investment for Q1 up by 5%; Census Bureau industrial ship- ment value is up by 29%.

“The trend in total invest- ment in industrial machinery in the US - the category that includes plastics machinery - has risen sharply in recent quarters,” said Bill Wood, the economist who analyses the plastics machinery market sector for the SPI. “We are entering the sweet spot of the capital expenditure cycle, and this bodes well for suppliers of plastics machinery, as well as the whole manufac- turing sector,” he said.  www.plasticsindustry.org
