Michigan celebrates the Mustang MICHIGAN, the home of the Ford

Mustang, is this year celebrating the 50th anniversary of one of the country’s best- loved automobiles.

The first Mustang model - made by Ford in Dearborn, Michigan – was introduced in Detroit in April 1964. It now resides in the Henry Ford Museum in Detroit.

Visitors

Michigan can

experi- ence the

to

legend of the Mustang by heading to Greenfield Village, part of the Henry Ford complex. It showcases a collection of arti-

facts of American innovation, including many items collected by Ford himself. Next month (July 17-19), Mackinaw City in northern Michigan will host a Ford Mustang Car Show. The event will include vintage and modern Mustangs, Detroit bands and local talent, food, drink, kids’ activities, a craft show and a parade

of Mustangs

across the five mile long

Mackinac Bridge.

GETTING HITCHED Newlywed in New York, starry-eyed in Seattle, amorous in Arizona, holed up in Hawaii… weddings, honeymoons and romantic tourism are big business in the UK market – and the Land of Plenty offers endless opportunity for those booking a dreamy USA break. Kuoni’s latest trends report sees the

‘Insane’ ride opens at Kansas City waterpark

WHAT claims to be the world’s tallest, fastest and steepest waterslide was unveiled to adrenalin seekers last month. Verrückt – which means ‘insane’ in German – will be the new stand-out attraction at the Schlitterbahn Waterpark in Kansas City and is already dominating the skyline at the park. Adventure seekers strap themselves

into a four-person raft that slides down a 168-foot seven-inch structure, only to be blasted back up a second massive hill and then sent down yet another 50-foot drop.

Visitors to the Schlitterbahn Waterpark can also enjoy

shared

experiences on more than a mile of interconnected river that goes from mild to wild, challenge themselves on towering water slides, catch a thrill on water coasters, ride a wave on the Boogie Bahn Surfing Ride and let the kids splash and play on 13 mini-slides. Alternatively

they can relax on

beaches, in private cabanas or a heated pool with a swim-up refreshment bar. The new waterslide is so big that it has its own website – theverruckt.com – or see: schlitterbahn.com/kansas-city

USA rank sixth among the operator’s top honeymoon destinations, placing it ahead of Malaysia, Italy and St Lucia. SUGGEST THE LOVE FUND Increased customer enquiries also led to Bon Voyage launching a “Love Fund” for friends and relatives to contribute towards a couple’s special holiday. Forget pots and pans, and other household items; these days it is the gift of travel that makes a couple happy. LGBT SAVVY And it’s not just the tour operators getting in on the action. Tourist boards are coming up with savvy ways to showcase their romantic offerings. For example, last year,

following

California’s changes in same-sex mar- riage laws, the Palm Springs Bureau of Tourism launched a new website – WeddingsinPalmSprings.com – to help LGBT couples plan their big day or honeymoon

in the same city where

Elvis and Pricilla Presley spent the first days of their marriage. Perhaps it is the sheer diversity of landscapes, with its bustling cities, beautiful beaches, majestic mountains and wild deserts; or maybe it is the infinite list of things to do that makes America so ideal for couples.
