Stars of the Future Vertikal Days cranes and access equipment exhibition was held on May 14th and 15th at Haydock Park Merseyside. This is a specialist event for those involved in the Lifting and Access Industry. During the exhibition, to an audience of 200 guests, the CPA (Construction

Plant-hire Association) hosted the 2nd ‘Stars of the Future’ plant mechanic apprenticeship awards presentation in an all-star ceremony full of young engineers, who took part in the annual competition from colleges nationwide. Presenting the awards was famed Finning Engineers, Spencer Smirl and Richmond Dykes from the ‘Coldest Journey’ Antarctic expedition. The engineers accompanied intrepid explorer, Sir Ranulph Fiennes in a journey through the frozen Antarctic. A special feature of the Awards was a very interesting and inspiring presentation and talk by Spencer and Richmond who shared their experiences with the audience. Friends, partners and parents looked on as each of the 21 regional winners

were presented with their award. Spencer Smirl , who flew in from Canada especially for the event said “I was

delighted to be asked to talk to the young plant mechanics. It was amazing to see so many students taking part and the amount of entries for the awards were very impressive.” Richmond Dykes added, “It was an honour to present the awards and share

our experiences with the students. It’s good to give something back and I hope our journey will inspire the next generation of engineers. I am a real believer in supporting apprentices and the CPA’s scheme is an excellent way to promote our industry and encourage new talent.”

Barton Civils maintain a

Volvo tradition Barton Civils located at Burton Latimer near Kettering and part of The Bennie Group, continues with a long tradition of favouring Volvo Construction Equipment products with the addition of four recently delivered compact excavators, supplied by Volvo’s utility equipment dealer SM Plant Ltd. Opting for Volvo was a fairly straight forward decision for Barton Civils

Managing Director Barry Page. “My personal preference has always been for the Volvo brand ever since I first hired then subsequently purchased a Volvo EC140 under the Premier Groundworks banner. The machine had an impressive build quality and robustness and performed very well,” he says. “Similarly The Bennie Group has a long tradition of running and operating Volvo Equipment so the decision to continue with the product made total sense.” Now under the re-named Barton Civils, the company has taken delivery of two

ECR88D reduced swing compact excavators along with an ECR25D zero swing excavators and an EC27C compact excavator from SM Plant Ltd. These latest machines join a mix of other Volvo compact equipment along with Volvo fourteen tonne EC140 tracked excavators and an EW140 wheeled excavator – in all totalling eleven machines. “Apart from the quality of the Volvo product we have an excellent relationship with the local mobile engineer and the after-market support we receive is second to none,” continues Mr Page. All the machines are covered by a Volvo blue service agreement meaning the machines are regularly maintained by qualified Volvo technicians using genuine parts” For more information call 01223 251720
