needed. The new disc brake can stop a disc in two seconds. Since it is a mechanical brake, it works even if a power cut should occur – ensuring operator safety. The patented auto-balancing function means that a full eight-hour working day is possible without exceeding EU limits on operator hand vibration safety. An optional design that allows the user to set a

much wider range of usage angles on the auxiliary handle is one that may appeal to some industrial users and reduces vibration even further.

Metabo has calculated that the discs can give up to

250% extra life and efficiency without 250% of extra cost. The showers of sparks delivered in the demos and “hands-on” sessions clearly impressed the visitors and my own verdict is that even with a limited time to “play” I could feel the extra abrasive power and material removing power of the grinder/disc combination. A Much Wider Range The new grinders are being marketed as a wide range with different power ratings and other options. The whole range consists of 22 models from 900 to 1700w that covers the use of 100 to 150mm wheel diameters. Readers should not underestimate how important the availability of 1700w of power in a small angle grinder is – it verges on the revolutionary to have so much capability in a compact grinder that is small enough to be used in a wide range of demanding applications. Users will be able to choose the

model with all the features needed for their particular application, whether it is heavy steel grinding, inox applications, or lighter engineering and building tasks. The integrated paddle switch option is available on all 22 machines in the range for added operator safety. And the Extra Surprises… Fantastic as the new Metabo grinder

range is, it would be a waste of an opportunity to show off to 600 people if

Ceramic Cutting Discs –M-Calibur and HydroResist Metabo reasoned that sometimes grinders are

only as good as the grinding discs that are fitted to them, and amply demonstrated the point at the “hands-on” sessions. I have never seen so many sparks fly! Accordingly, two ranges of ceramic-based grinding wheels have been added to the line up. The M-Calibur and HydroResist wheels. It was hard not to be impressed as the new M-Calibur wheel cut through a sheet of steel faster than three competitors and still had nearly half a disc left when the others were worn down almost to the arbor.

there weren’t some other products on show. As a confirmed “woodie” I was very interested in the new range of seven crosscut and mitre saws on show, and even more happy that I was able to spend a couple of hours trying them out and talking to the product managers concerned. The range is not due to be launched until the Autumn, but deserves a mention here in my view. Metabo, with a very shrewd eye on the future, is

thinking about a “cordless only” building site environment. – It has a popular cordless angle grinder in its range remember! Having spent a lot of time and research budget on cordless technology, Metabo

believes that cordless power not only matches some current mains applications, but in the future, cordless will be a match for mains power in almost every case. Hence, the launch of two 18v Lithium Ion

portable crosscut saws. These saws have been completely redesigned for maximum mobility and capacity, ease of use and versatility. The KS18LTX216 is a simple mitre saw, while the KGS 18LTX216 has a sliding function with a very handy 300mm crosscut capacity at 90 degrees.
