Sparks Fly at Metabo Grinder Launch – Continued

For example, the newly designed KGS 305 M I

tried out made short work of a softwood beam 300mm wide and 105mm thick. Weighing in at 19.6 Kgs it is quite portable, although the wheeled stand is a more sensible option for transport and easy set-up. The other saws in the range –redesigned versions

of the KS 216 Lasercut, KGS 216 and KGS 254 M are joined by the KGSV 216 M with electronic motor speed control – ideal for cutting metals and plastic commonly used in construction. Laser guidance for the cuts is not new, but on the

new saws, the laser is relocated to a position where it will not be coated in sawdust after a morning’s work. The new super-bright LED lights also illuminate the cut area where it is most needed. But the thing I noticed the most is that Metabo

The redesign work has increased the user

friendliness of this portable saw immensely. When locked into portable mode, the carry handle is perfectly placed so that the saw doesn’t bang against your legs as you move it from place to place – Metabo’s research has found that portability is a major feature demanded by siteworkers. Using a standard 5.2Ah 18v

battery pack, I was able to cut 60x60mm softwood effortlessly, the blade leaving a smooth, almost planed finish. I am already a convert to these

cordless machines, but the Metabo versions convinced me that most second fix applications onsite will become largely cordless powered. Due to market sometime in the

Autumn, are five new corded models. Having made a million mitre saws already, Metabo can claim to know a lot about what these versatile saws need to do.

has redesigned the dust collection system. Mitre saws are notoriously dusty, even with vacuum extraction fitted. But the new design, even on the cordless models where mains dust extraction might not be possible, allows a high percentage of the dust to be collected into a dust bag. The redesign has also made all the controls for the saw to be visible and operated from the front, some

with quick release function. So, instead of footling around trying to alter the bevel angle with a hard-to- reach lever at the back of the saw, a simple flick of a side-mounted lever is all that is now necessary. Other simple things like a spindle lock for blade

changing, better work clamping and versatile extendable side work supports make for a machine that is very easy to work with and makes better productivity a real possibility.

Metabo and the future… I came away from this press conference very

impressed and heartened about the future. Clearly, Metabo has a lot to be proud of in terms of its Research and Development as well as its commitment to producing high quality tools that exploit modern electronics and manufacturing methods. Its aim to be a Gamechanger in the power tool business has had a fillip with the launch of such innovative products. On a more mundane level, I left with fingers

itching to try out all the new products simply because the time I had to “play” at Nurtingen was just enough to whet my appetite to try the tools in real-life, on site conditions. Great stuff.
