hen and where did it start? How long ago? For as long as I can
remember, the adage “Big Boys Don’t Cry” has been part of our culture. What a burden that puts on young boys who skin a knee or fall off their bike! Eyes fi ll with tears—but somehow the tears don’t fall.
As they become young men, then fathers and
grandfathers the same unwritten rule seems to apply….Lose a game….Lose a girlfriend….Lose a job….Lose a child….Lose a wife….Life brings all sorts of challenges and crises—yet males are supposed to “soldier on.” Not so for women, for whom it’s acceptable to experience the full range of emotion. How great the toll of holding feelings inside! We, as women, cannot possibly imagine. However, it is increasingly known that suppressing emotion does great harm and that men be allowed the same latitude as women. Give thought to Dr. Dwight Franklin’s words (p. 18) and encourage— not disparage—the men in your life toward a healthy expression of whatever they’re feeling. This June issue celebrates the men in our lives.
