Fear: A person who always lives in fear will have difficulty accomplishing many tasks due to being afraid that something will go wrong, rather than focusing on all that might go right. A person who is completely fearless can be reckless and a danger to themselves or others. While growing up in a very conservative Southern home it became clear to me that it was acceptable for a grown man to show happiness and, though unpleasant, it was also relatively acceptable for him to lose his temper from time to time. However, showing true worry, fear and grief was somehow frowned upon. I believe this perception comes from both the outside and inner world. Whether it is the old John Wayne Westerns or the Prince in a Disney cartoon, we have been taught as men that it is up to us to “save the day.” Yet we do not live in a fairy tale and the “John Wayne” attitude isn’t always the best way of dealing with our problems. In a 2009 “Veterans Today” article, Dr. Lei Thomas, a psychiatrist at the Dallas VA Mental Health Clinic, described this “John Wayne” attitude as being a major reason why soldiers with PTSD would not seek help. These soldiers seemingly believed that admitting that help was needed would make them a failure as a soldier and as a man.

The idea that a man needs to “tough it out” and be strong for everyone else often causes more harm than good--not only to himself but to those around him. When we only know how to handle problems through the use of a single emotion we move towards a very unbalanced emotional state. If a man is worried about his finances and he deals with that situation by using anger towards family, friends or co-workers, it creates a lot of confusion for those around him. Simply communicating the true emotion of worry can help those closest to him understand why there is emotional distress and give support as needed.


We always hear about how unrealistic the media’s portrayal of women can be. We hear how hard it is on women to try and live up to the “standards” that have been set for them. While all of this is very true, men can also have unrealistic expectations set upon them. Oriental Medicine teaches us that men are more Yang and women are more Yin in their nature. Yang can be compared to a strong force while Yin is said to be more nurturing. What this means in society is that most men will have a more forceful, testosterone-filled way of being.
