YAUPON HOLLY The Native American Tea
F
or hundreds of years the American Indians of the Southeast
drank yaupon tea. The tea can come from the leaves of three native plants: upright yaupon, weeping yaupon and yaupon schillings holly. Dried leaves have a green-tea taste. Roasted leaves taste similar to black tea. Yaupon is the only caffeinated plant native to North America and its tea can contain as much caffeine as tea or coffee, but with a higher antioxidant level and with milder effects on the digestive system. Yaupon is easy to grow. Schillings holly, the dwarf, is a
very common landscape plant in this area. Simply pick the new growth leaves, dry and brew your own tea. Or purchase yaupon tea, all naturally-harvested by hand from wild secure populations of yaupon holly in the maritime forests of Volusia County, Florida. Containers of tea bags are available from South Seminole Farm & Nursery in Casselberry. For more info call: 407-695-3247 or visit: www.sseminolefarmandnursery. com. Yaupon Asi Tea, LLC is located in New Smyrna Beach. Call 1-855-TRY-YAUPON or visit
