he job of a facilities manager (FM) has adapted over the years and the
pay bracket has almost doubled, with the FM taking on a greater responsibility and status. At times, they facilitate business growth and expansion, participating strategically alongside the board and senior management. Other times, they’re explaining why young women cannot use hair straighteners at their desks. It is a puzzling role indeed. And if you
ask the small army of sales people that are looking to sell to them, it is a rather elusive role too. So who is the FM and what do they need to get the job done? “When you need to find the marketing
manager, you can just ask, simple as that. Whereas finding out who’s the decision making FM is a whole different kettle of fish” said Fergus Bird, group event manager, UBM Live. And so, for this reason, the Facilities
Show has grown, strengthened and even boomed over the years - you will find FMs there. Held in association with the British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM) for the past ten years, it has developed into the national show that a professionalised industry warrants.
The event, running from 17th-19th
June, will have over 350 companies exhibiting. Not to mention, the other 1,100 companies involved in the co- located shows of IFSEC International (security), FIREX (fire safety), Safety & Health Expo, Energy and Environment Expo and Service Management Expo. FMs can move freely amongst the shows.

arranging a meeting there and then on- site. This should make it even easier for FMs to find what they are looking for and help exhibitors meet key visitors. It will also house a ‘Meet The Buyer
Zone’, which will be an area especially dedicated to meeting procurement teams from the TFM community. More on the co-located shows will be featured in the June issue.
